What are the dates of the exam?
Previously offered only twice a year, the EPPP (Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology) is now offered 6 days a week throughout the year at a local testing center. Once you have applied and been approved by your state board to sit for the exam, you will receive a second application to take the exam. Once that is processed, you will receive an authorization-to-test letter. You must schedule and take the exam within 60 days of receiving your authorization-to-test.
What is the passing score on the EPPP?
The scores in most states are reported as scaled scores ranging between 200 and 800. The passing score is 500—which is equivalent to 70% correct answers to the scorable questions. New York uses a scaled score of 75—but this, too, is equivalent to 70% correct answers.
What percentage of candidates using the Academic Review program pass?
Over 90% of those candidates who follow our program pass the exam. The pass rate is even higher for those who also attend our training events, such as the 4-Day Live Comprehensive Seminar.
When does my subscription begin?
After purchasing an Online Study Program, your time in the program begins whenever you're ready. Your subscription time begins after you've registered and have begun to use the online materials.
What should I do first to prepare for the exam?
After purchasing an
Online Study Program, you should first complete the Diagnostic Assessment. This will give you a general preview of the type of questions to expect on the examination. It will also identify your relative strengths and weaknesses in each of the content areas, which can serve as a guide for where to focus your studies.
How much time do I need to study?
The time you need will depend somewhat on you—your motivation, background, anxiety level, how long you've been out of school, how much time you have, and your expertise in the content areas. However, most candidates require 300 to 350 hours of study to pass the EPPP. That's about 15 to 20 hours a week for 5 to 6 months. This is a good target to aim for on your study schedule. Remember that there is no such thing as overpreparing for this exam. It has been our experience that those who do well on this exam are those who spend the most time preparing. There is no short-cut for success. Also, keep in mind that over 90% of those candidates who follow our program pass the exam. So, your efforts
will pay off.
What is covered on the exam?
The ASPPB has designated the following eight content areas with their degree of emphasis on the EPPP, which is subject to change.
- Treatment, Intervention, Prevention, and Supervision (14%)
- Ethical/Legal/Professional Issues (15%)
- Assessment and Diagnosis (14%)
- Cognitive-Affective Bases of Behavior (13%)
- Growth and Lifespan Development (12%)
- Social and Multicultural Bases of Behavior (12%)
- Biological Bases of Behavior (12%)
- Research Methods and Statistics (8%)
What content areas should I focus on?
Academic Review divides the content areas into 11 user-friendly sections. While all the sections are important, some are more heavily emphasized on the exam than others and thus warrant more study time. The sections can be viewed as falling into two broad categories—the high- and low- priority categories. The high-priority category includes seven content areas, each representing 20 to 30 questions on the exam. The low-priority categories consist of four content areas, each representing 3 to 12 questions on the exam.
To determine how much study time to devote to each content area, you should consider both the amount of emphasis that area has on the exam and your relative strength or weakness in the area. If you don't know where to focus your studies, look at your pattern of errors on the practice exams. You will make the most progress if you target those areas you don't understand. Keep in mind, though, that the more you can improve your performance in the high-priority areas, the greater impact it will have on your overall score.
Do your materials cover everything that's going to be on the EPPP?
If you study our materials thoroughly, you will obtain enough content knowledge to pass the exam—and that's our goal. The exam changes somewhat throughout the year, which is why we are continually researching and updating our materials to ensure that you have the most up-to-date, exam-related information and sample questions available. Our research indicates that over 90% of the content in the EPPP is covered in our materials. However, there are always a small number of questions—maybe 5 or 10—about very obscure areas of psychology that cannot be predicted. In addition, there may be another 20 to 30 questions that are based on concepts covered in our materials, but are presented in language that is very different from how you studied them. Fortunately, you can miss up to 52 of the scorable questions plus the 50 pretest questions and still pass. However, most of our candidates score well above the passing score—typically between 80% and 95%.
How do your practice exam scores compare to what I can expect on the EPPP?
Our practice exam review questions are primarily designed as a learning tool to help you identify topics that need extra review. However, you will find many of our questions to be very similar to those on the EPPP. The scores on our practice exams are likewise intended to assess your level of mastery of the materials. They are not intended to precisely predict your performance on the EPPP. However, your chance of passing the EPPP improves as your scores improve on our practice exams.
Will I need to review any other materials?
No. Our materials cover the range of topics that appear on the exam. We exclude topics that don't appear on the exam. Psychology textbooks in the library or on your bookshelf provide only a general review of the field of psychology—not the EPPP. We have been helping candidates pass their exams since 1976, and our materials are continuously updated to provide you with all the information you need to succeed.
How can I improve my test-taking skills for this exam?
We have created Test-Taking Strategies video, which provides numerous effective tips and strategies to improve your test-taking skills. There is also a list of test-taking tips in our Home Study Program. However, the best way to improve your test-taking skills is through taking our Practice Exams and reviewing the Explanatory Answers, which explain for each question why the correct answer is the best choice.
Are there any workshops I could attend to improve my chance of passing?
Academic Review offers live training events online and in-person and is an excellent review of the materials. Well over 90% of those who complete our online study program as recommended and who attend our live training events pass the EPPP.
